“The body becomes a sign. Movement becomes mythology.
In André Che Isse’s Dancers, the human figure is transformed through impossible postures, tension and balance. Bodies bend, contract and expand, becoming almost architectural forms suspended between dance, ritual and imagination.
Painter, dancer and poet, Che Isse has developed this universe over more than two decades, creating his own constellation of guardians, gymnosophists and mythical dancers. His figures inhabit a language in which the body is no longer simply represented: it becomes a vessel for movement, thought and symbolic transformation.
Created with materials including wall tempera, rust, pencil, glass pigments and cord sewn directly onto fabric, many of these works are conceived to be backlit. Light passes through the surface and radically changes their presence: what appears warm, earthy and material under frontal light can emerge in luminous, almost electric blue when illuminated from behind.
The result is a body caught between matter and light, anatomy and abstraction – a dancer that seems to exist in a space of its own.”
